Actionscript 3 Development

Over the past few weeks I’ve really begun to get involved with object orientated Actionscript programming and over the weekend I’m going to be moving onto AS3 now that Creative Suite 3 has been out and about for a while. I’ve been looking over some books and I’ve got an introductory book to Flash animation using AS3 and the Flex 2 development environment. I’m quite excited. One of the things that I’ve always wanted to do was take my ability as a Flash programmer to another level and bring something new to my game. I’m eager to learn how the new XML handling in AS3 works and also doing some 3D animation with Flash and a 3D application.

There has been a few sites I’ve noticed lately that have given my an inspirational boost to get my ass in gear. One of those sites is LAB. Some of the examples on that site are truly great. Such as Liquid Form and Block Clock. PixelBreaker is another site whose Polar Clock is exceptional… I could sit and watch it for hours.  I’m going to use this opportunity to develop my program skills by trying to stick as closely as possible to OOP methods and do as little time line animation as possible.

I recently completed work on a flash banner that used an XML backend which enabled the user to customise the look and feel as well as the images used in the banner entirely outwith the Flash movie and Actionscript code. Being able to develop something that required no time line animation and which is flexible in it’s without actual modification to the flash movie excited me greatly. I’m looking to learn how to use packages and classes effectively. I’ve been doing a lot of reading on the web and going over tutorials but there is only so much you can do without access to the Flash CS3 IDE or Flex Builder 2. I’m looking for a free alternative but the only one I have found is a command driven compiler which I’d rather not use at least to begin with.
