So, I finally bit the bullet and went for the Canon 5d mkII after spending days watching example HD footage and still shots from those who had preview and pre production models. I also got my first L lens… the 17-40mmL and absolutely adore it.
The first opportunity I had to use the camera out in the wild was last week when I went to the Stop the War protest in Edinburgh. A great opportunity to do some documentary photography and that’s exactly how it panned out. Although being restricted to the wide angle lens and he 50mm meant getting in close, it wasn’t really a problem. People were there to demonstrate and be photographed.
I’m extremely impressed by the fast focusing abilities on the camera. Even in low light as it was that day. I shot almost exclusively at ISO800 and the results are superb; sharp, clear and on point.
Physically the camera is obviously a lot more substantial than the 400D I had previously, but it feels good in the hand and the weight isn’t really that big a problem… in saying that though I did have a next strap on for most of the shoot.
I’ve tried playing about with the HD using my 1.8 50mm lens, but I think it’ll come into it’s own once I invest in some more glass, the next on my list is the 24-70mmL 2.8. Such a gorgeous lens and extremely capable from what I’ve seen and read.
If you’re interested in what the camera can do then read this post. Also, check out Vincent’s blog. It’s a great read.
