Mac convert
Monday, November 19th, 2007Well, I’m now officially a Mac convert. Having used a PC for as long as I can remember I went out and bought myself a MacBook Pro as a replacement to my Dell XPS which has given my no problems at all but I needed something that I could carry around with me and believe me when I say but carrying a 17inch Gaming laptop around is not the best thing, especially when it weighs as much as an XPS does.
I went for a 15inch MacBook Pro with a pretty decent spec including 2gig of RAM and 160GB hard drive. More than enough for what I’m doing but enough to keep the computer in action for a good few years from now.
I’m just amazing at how complete a package the MacBook Pro is. Sure it looks pretty damn sexy but it also has a lot of functionality to match the looks and just holding it my hands is enough reassurance that I’ve bought arguably one of the best laptop computers on the market.
I’m also running CS3 in 64bit mode which is excellent. I can have all the CD3 core applications up and running at the same time with very little slowdown.
There are also so many funky little applications available for OSX such as Quicksilver and Adium… and talking about the OSX, Leopard is fantastic. The quick view is something Microsoft should have incorporated into their Windows platform a long time ago. Leopard pulls it off spectacularly. Flicking through your documents like the pages of a book in such a smooth and effective manner never felt so good. I could sit here and flick through my entire photo collection and just watch the images fly by using that gorgeous transition.
The one main concern that I have is the heat that the laptop generates. I’ve got BootCamp installed ensuring that I can play Counter Strike: Source at a steady 70-80 frames per second. While gaming the fan runs pretty much at full speed and the top end of the laptop really does heat up a fair bit. The air outlet at the back looks pretty adequate but it’s just a bit unnerving feeling the heat on the laptop. I’ve been told that it’s normal and the manual itself warns that the laptop is susceptible to over heating but that it is normal in its operation.
Anyway, it’s safe to say that I’m enjoying using my MacBook Pro.
