Flash on the Beach - Day 2

Tuesday, November 6th, 2007

Wow. This was a pretty good day. I’m beginning to see why this conference has such a good name already despite only being 2 years old. I saw some pretty cool stuff today presented by some very talented and inspirational people. Two talks on Adobe Air and one on Papervision followed by Joshua Davis talking about his work and his methods of computation art. Some really inspiring stuff. I cannot wait to get back home to try some of this stuff out. I also attended a very cool talk about creating particles in Flash. I’ve always wondered how people have created smoke effects in flash and we were shown how to do it the quick and dirty way but with very good results.

The four presentations I attended today were pretty much maxed out capacity wise. The two smaller theaters could easily still take in a few hundred people with the main auditorium capable of holding upwards of 3500 people if they included the balcony. I didn’t really meet anyone today, most of the day was spent walking backwards and forwards and sitting in the talks. The evening was pretty wild though. Brighton is one strange but pretty intriguing place. We met some friendly locals and had a good time on the dance floor. I can’t remember the name of the nightclub but it was pretty much situated on Brighton Beach below the main road running along the edge of the pebble beach. I’ll need to take some pictures to help illustrate the setup but it’s something I’ve not seen before. The club itself was one of the strangest and shadiest pubs I’ve ever been in but the night progressed well. I’ve never danced to so much cheese in my life and I hope no one managed to capture any of it on camera.

I’ll do a write-up on the talks that I attended at some point in the week.
